Here’s my take on Lucille. Her thirst for blood is unquenchable. “She’s a real Vampire Bat.”
All of a sudden I had this idea, that Superman and the Martian Manhunter were basically immigrants. They had lost their homes and found a new one on earth. Racist behavior and fear of exotic/alien things is often labeled with the term “xenophobia”. Not only is this term used in politics, but some people might know it from sci-fi movies and novels. Those connections lead me to create this design, where I had to find fitting aliens from different franchises, who where equally popular and well known and also had distinctive silhouettes that everyone would immediately recognize.
Through the links below you can find the design on different clothing store sites:
Here’s an update on one of my Sunnydale inspired designs. I had to change Ms Summers’ haircut just a bit to get a closer resemblance.
It’s also available at Teepublic.
The last few weeks were really busy and there was no time to post anything because I was working so hard. Last month I started re-watching “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” in its entirety and I’m still on season 2. Experiencing this classic show again for the fist time (It’s been more than 10 years ago since I last watched “Buffy”.) is not only generating this painful but dear feeling of nostalgia, but also spawns unforeseen bursts of creativity. Here are some designs I did after finishing the first season and cheerfully diving into the second. “Spike’s still a bad guy.” It’s crazy.
I’ve finally finished my Marceline “pin-up”. It took me almost a day to figure out which font I should use and how to put it on the picture without messing it up. My first idea was to use a an ornamental tattoo font but in the end I settled for horror-themed writing.
At one point I had a spiderweb in the background but it took too much away from the character and was a bit distracting. Another idea was to have everything but the axe-bass, eyes, lips and boots colored in shades of grey, but the blue pants felt too iconic to not have them in their familiar tone as well as the slightly “greenish” skin. When I started thinking about a good slogan/title dealing with “rad/red stuff”, Nancy Sinatra’s famous song Summer Wine came to my mind. Obviously, I changed the lyrics a bit.
Lately some details about the new Supergirl TV series have been published. From the character descriptions it seems like the writers have no problem to almost entirely ignore the source material and simply grab some random names from the DCU to equip them with new character traits and backstories. Jimmy Olsen is a handsome hunk and probably one of Kara’s love interests. Cat Grant (Wtf?) is Kara’s boss and founder of the media conglomerate CatCo. Hank Hanshaw works for the CIA. (Wait a minute …Seriously?!!) You can check out the descriptions below and read an entire article on IGN.
James Olsen: In his late 20s/early 30s, open ethnicity, James is a smart, worldly and attractive photographer for CatCo (see below). Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.
Cat Grant: The project is eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as “J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour.”
Winslow “Wynn” Schott: This twentysomething tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to.
Hank Henshaw: As an upstart CIA agent, Hank grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.
I’m a bit bummed (since I’ve tried to keep my cautious optimism alive as long as possible) but it really looks like the series could turn out to be a poor people’s “The Devil Wears Prada” meets “Dawson’s Creek” with some Sci-Fi elements thrown into the mix. Sadly, now there’s no more hope for Powergirl to show up which could have been so great.
Also, here’s a new design I did yesterday featuring Terra who’s my favorite Titan.
